PulpO
Group Exhibition

Opening reception - Friday, August 6th 2010, 6pm-9:30pm

August 6th through August 30th, 2010

Tulum Gallery is proud to present PulpO, an eight-person group show of new drawings and paintings by New York-based artists in animation, illustration, and the fine arts. Showing together in a variety of styles and media, these eight artists draw from their backgrounds as representational artists to cultivate narratives influenced by pulp and comic-art traditions. Themes like science fiction, war, horror, the occult, exploitative stories, sensational iconography, and adventure are interpreted by this group with surreal, whimsical, and abstract flourishes.

The manic and comically apocalyptic drawings of Christy Karacas, co-creator of Adult Swim’s Superjail!, will be featured for the first time on a smaller scale in PulpO. Devin Clark, the creator of Comedy Central’s Ugly Americans, will showcase his obsessive and tangled “hair” paintings. PulpO will also feature the painted pop culture musings of Jackson Publick, creator of Adult Swim’s Venture Bros., the sinister characters of illustration painter Kelly Denato’s storybook-acrylics, the playful “multiplane” objects of animation designer Chris George, and more.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Liz Artinian is a Brooklyn-based artist who has worked in animation for 12 years. Her paintings draw influence from illustration, animation, and American folk art. PulpO represents a departure for the artist as her narratives become more abstracted, exploitative, and surreal. Liz has just finished her 4th season as Color Supervisor for the animated series Venture Bros., which airs on Adult Swim.

Robert Bohn was born in Connecticut, where his time in the woods greatly influenced him. He is an avid collector of objects, and his work is born of much research and exploration. Process and destruction are re-occurring themes in Robert’s work, so it not unusual for him to burn or disassemble his work in order to create new pieces or films. Robert is a contributor to theAMIGOunit, an art-collective website.

Devin Clark born in Philadelphia in 1977, received his BFA from Syracuse University in 2000 and currently resides in Brooklyn. In the artist’s own words, “My goal is to make myself laugh. If I can create a piece that elicits even a small chuckle then I'm satisfied.” Comprised of hundreds of multicolored dots radiating out from his embattled and tangled subjects, his hair paintings are both fascinating and disturbing. Devin created the animated series Ugly Americans airing on Comedy Central.

Jared Deal is an animator and animation designer based in New York. He has been part of a wide variety of animated projects during his 12 years in the business. His recent solo exhibition Reclaimed Woods debuted a new style for the artist, as he explored folk narratives in varied media. Jared creates toys- some plush, and some plastic- to further develop characters that appear in both his fine art and professional work.

Kelly Denato figurative paintings are whimsical, colorful, and full of motion. She develops subtle narratives between creatures that inhabit surreal spaces. Her paintings reinterpret classical storybook painting styles that often evoke sinister premeditations among her subjects. Kelly Denato has been working in illustration and animation for more than 10 years. She currently lives in Brooklyn.

Chris George is a New York-based illustrator and animation character designer. His newest creations are built from layers of painted plexiglass that form a “multi-plane” painting. His work is steeped in wit and whimsy, and explores all things as he describes: “weird, wild, and wonderful in the world.” Over the past 12 years, Chris has lent his talents to companies such as Cartoon Network, Disney, MTV, and Nickelodeon

Christy Karacas work is full manic energy. It depicts the horror of apocalypse, death, and sensational cruelty with joyous cartoon humor. His work for PulpO represents a departure for the artist- his frenzied world encapsulated in smaller drawings. Christy is the co-creator, writer, and director of the animated series Superjail! on Adult Swim. He lives in Brooklyn and plays guitar in the rock band, Cheeseburger.

Jackson Publick is the creator, director, and co-writer of Venture Bros., an Adult Swim animated series. His work highlights the oddities and inadvertent humor of pop culture, while it indulges those who posses a deep nostalgia for it. For the group-show Too Art for TV, Too he debuted prints from his An Ideal Web series, a farcical mishmash of Indian and American pop culture.
