Away From The Numbers
Curated by Jordin Isip
Group Exhibition

Opening reception - November 1st, 7-9pm

November 1st through November 24th, 2013

BROOKLYN, NY (RELEASE October 15th, 2013) — Bunnycutlet Gallery is pleased to present Away From The Numbers, a group exhibition curated by New York-based artist Jordin Isip, featuring seven New York and Rhode Island-based artists.

Away From The Numbers brings together a mix of established and emerging artists who break artistic formulas with their work. To pursue a path that is "not by the numbers" is to deliberately rebel against a system that isn't working. However to simply move away from "the numbers," as Isip carefully titled it, implies a softer, more intuitive inclination to explore new options, as if unintentionally led astray by a wayward artistic preoccupation.

Paula Searing's ink drawings are jubilant; her gestural figures are set in satirical situations as they masterfully rush across paper. Her work for Away From The Numbers is a departure for the artist as she transforms her work into "wearable" objects. By endeavoring to camouflage her drawings as everyday items, Searing seeks to expose the passively familiar with expressive and eye-catching imagery, altering visual expectations in a playful way.

Hazel Lee Santino's work also plays with observation and perception with her mixed-media moth sculptures, constructed with copper, aluminum, and paper, and painted with imagery from well known historical paintings. The artist, fearing that "representations of nature [are] more prized than living specimens," produces these creatures as a hypothetical evolution -- nature protecting itself by taking on the appearance of things we safeguard and deem priceless.

Hannah Lee's delicate illustrator's hand can be deceiving. Her careful and controlled rendering approach gives way to offbeat and surreal imagery, breaking thematic expectations in a disarming way. Kristen Liu-Wong's work, by contrast, is an aggressive visual declaration of color, graphic shapes, and kinetic figures, yet it is her subject matter that playfully disarms. Also breaking visual expectations are Franca Barone's tightly rendered drawings, as humorous as they are disturbing, William Buzzell's mixed media paintings, work that obsessively seeks to convey precision out of imperfect found objects, and Gregory Benton's stunningly dreamlike and mischievous collaged renderings.

Exhibiting their work together for the first time, these artists unselfconsciously convey an offbeat point of view. In the curator's own words, "I was listening to a record by The Jam and "Away from the Numbers" came on... the song is basically about individuality and going against the grain. These artists are not paying particular attention to what is popular or what is in style... [but are making] compelling, thoughtful, beautiful and memorable work."
