BROOKLYN, NY (RELEASE February 17, 2014) — Bunnycutlet Gallery is pleased to present The Devil's Carnival a series of new works by New York- based artists Devin Clark and Anthony Freda.

Devin Clark is best known for creating the Comedy Central animated series Ugly Americans. His signature graphic style was first inspired by the counter-culture scene, beginning to emerge in the 80's, that surrounded him as a child. Growing up on the border of South Philly and Center City, Clark's proximity to punk rock clothing booths, tattoo parlors, arcades, indie-theaters, skate shops and comic book stores provided the young artist with an exciting array of cultural obsessions and visual revelations. Recollecting his influences, Clark explains, "It was an awesome place to grow up near as a kid… a visual explosion… but it was also gritty and a little dangerous… there was an amazing store called Eyes Gallery that had hand painted Day-Of-The-Dead stuff. I think all that exposure compounded an appreciation for bold graphic work in my brain. It was a world of thick inky lines and spot color."

Anthony Freda is an illustrator with a long and distinguished career in his field. His work is political, often utilizing re-painted images taken from classical paintings or American vintage iconography, transforming them, primarily by supplanting their context, into ironic, often sardonic takes on current issues. The artist, describing his themes, explains "Communicating a concept in an ironic or unexpected way is what I am always trying to do. I like to use iconography… and reconfigure it in ways that channel my own political passions. Using humor to temper the message helps keep me from being a total a-hole." Freda collages, paints and builds on found and antique objects, carefully chosen so that their history, shape and texture can add a layer of meaning to the imagery, and ultimately the message, that he chooses.

The Devil's Carnival, as a title, binds Clark and Freda in their conceptual approach and attitude. In their work, both artists employ heavy doses of skull-laden satire, bitter irony, and counter-culture styled irreverence, yet their delivery system is a playful, festive and humorous pill to swallow. A lightness in approach that is betrayed by the deeper, more cryptic minds behind the message.
